Mentioned in Premios Soberano (2024)
CIA operative Jo tries to balance her personal and professional lives as a front-runner in the agency’s war on terror. Real military advisors helped create a more authentic performance of gun handling, house cleaning, positioning, squad action, etc. d. Mr. Sheridan knows how to transport us into testosterone-fueled macho worlds without clichés and seemingly without a plot.
Guys are simple
That’s what it is. No apologies are necessary. His characters are always down-to-earth, and he’s exceptionally skilled at casting. But to be great, you have to write good roles for women. The script should be as good, if not better, than for men.
They’re strong and believable
Women are smarter, more complicated. Beth in Yellowstone (a great character and performance), the barrel riders, the lone rancher (a fantastic Jen Landon as Teeter) are great female characters who fit naturally and effortlessly into the world of the story. Not just “partner…” or T&A. He stepped up his game with Faith Hill’s excellent character, broken in 1883, and then Dame Mirren in the flop 1923. Now we have Zoe Saldana doing some of the best work of her career.
What the hell!
I absolutely believe in her as the CIA chief in an open marriage (nice touch). I believe in De Oliveira as a broken woman with a burning rage that won’t let up, and thank you, thank you, thank you to the writers/directors/producers for NOT letting her get the best of her male co-worker with an extra hundred pounds of muscle. Truth first! I think her character is much more interesting if she’s the one who needs to be cut down or simply knocked to the ground before she gives up. Now let’s talk about Jill Wagner or should I say her hair?
I’m buying it
From sentimental Hallmark scum to super cool commando? Special mention: Miss Lanier as the obnoxious teenage daughter. I look forward to this loose canon continuing to avoid the clichés of teenage angst. Good actress, could be interesting…
