Tale
Following the events of The Batman (2022), Oz Cobb, a.k.a. the Penguin, makes a play to take over the reins of Gotham’s criminal underworld. Aside from the Bat-signal in the final shot of the season finale, we never got our Robert Pattinson cameo in The Penguin. Colin Farrell struggled to get his version of the Penguin to smoke tobacco in Batman (2022), but he failed.

For his own series, however, the character is depicted as a casual tobacco user, with a preference for cigars. An umbrella falls and the logo changes to the Warner Bros. logo. Featured on Graham Norton in gusti: Lady Gaga/Demi Moore/Colin Farrell/Richard Ayoade/Jack Savoretti (2024).
Absolutely nailed the tone and atmosphere
Brutal, grim, and dark, but Farrell manages to capture that spark of charm, just as Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano did. There are similarities to the Sopranos, especially in tone. There’s a lot of dark stuff in this opening episode, but there are still comedic moments that fit the tone and don’t undermine it. Where do we start with Farrell?
Amazing is the right word
I love watching talented star actors throw themselves into roles like this, and the makeup/cgi or whatever it is they did to physically transform him into the Penguin not only passes the eye test, but looks incredibly realistic. There’s always the risk that if the makeup isn’t good enough or isn’t enough, it can completely distract you. With the Penguin, it adds to his performance and the overall quality of the show, because it’s a hell of a job. And Farrell as an actor completely immerses himself in the role.
Well done to everyone involved in this project
I may be a little biased because he was one of my favorite actors before this show, but I think this will give him the recognition he deserves. I never tune in to new shows right away because I like to binge-watch all the episodes at once, but I wanted to see how this one would actually turn out. It didn’t disappoint me, it actually blew me away.
